Craig, Montana...there isn't much to say about Craig (and that is the point). Craig has a population of roughly 43 people and is a community 100% focused on fishing.

There are three local fly shops with a few great resteraunts and bars to enjoy. This trip will consist of exploring the fishing options on the Missouri river and seeing what potential options this area might hold for our club in the future. We are thinking about a 2026 "Trout Camp."

One thing that is really cool about Craig is that everything is walking distance so we can easily access pretty much everything on foot.

One Youtube search of "Craig Montana Fishing" and you will understand how it came up on our radar...

Fishing

We will be doing 3-4 full days of guided fishing from drift boats. Depending on what the weather gives us, we will either be dry fly fishing or nymphing. We have a pretty good shot of hitting a Blue Wing Olive hatch that would allow us to enjoy some pretty world class topwater.

If you are like me, and interested in learning more about Spay Fishing, there will be opportunities to dip your toes into that as well.

Lodging

We will be stating in the Craig House and the Refuge House. Both houses are in town and walking distance to pretty much everything. I attached a few photos below. Single occupancy rooms can be made available.

Flights

We will fly into Great Falls International Airport (GTF) which is a 45 minute drive to where we will be staying. If you need to, you can fly into Helena Regional Airport (HLN) and we can accommodate your transportation. Also, due to GTF having limitted flights, it can be a little pricier than most domestic flights.

Eating

As always, we care about the food. While we are on the trip we will have hot breakfast and good coffee in the morning, lunch on the drift boats and explore some of the local resteraunts at night.

We will absolutely be checking out Izaak's which is a "must eat" for the area. Check out their menu HERE.

We also plan on eating one night at the Craig Taphouse. Check out their menu HERE.

And for all of you cold beer lovers, we will make sure to check out Uncle Joe's. You can see some of their selection HERE.

We will also be putting together a big dinner as a group at the lodge.

Fly Shops

Although Craig has a population of a little more than three dozen people...Craig does have three fly shops. While on the trip we will be getting a chance to see these shops. For those interested, @Hunter Leavine will be conducting a few private podcast at the shops over happy hour...these folks definitely have some amazing stories.

The main flyshop we are working with is called Headhunters. If you want to learn more about them you can check out their site HERE.

What is a "Scout Trip" anyway?

Glad you asked, a "Scout Trip" is pretty much just like it sounds. It is an oppurtunity for a small number of club members to go somewhere that we might want to one day develop in our calendar.

Going on a Scout trip does not mean compromising on the fishing, or the food...it just means that it has more limited spots, and will have a more "exploratory feel."

This would be a great trip for anyone wanting to scratch their freshwater itch, or someone who would like to be a part of a smaller crew...and hopefully offer some helpful feedback for our future plans.
